If you are a faculty member and would like to build a course Web site then this demonstration is for you. It will give you the opportunity to try Course Builder by actually building a temporary Web site.
It takes about five minutes, though you may want to spend more time exploring the site you build and some of the modules included in it. No special computer knowledge is required other than how to use your web browser, which you're already doing or you wouldn't be reading this!
We must emphasize, however, that the site you build with this demonstration program is not permanent. Your course will be "written in sand" - or silicon, to be more precise - and will last only until the next person comes along and uses this demo to build a course. That may be in the next minute or days from now. When they do that, they will overwrite your course, erasing it.
But this demo will give you an understanding of how Course Builder works and how easy it is to use. On the UMass Dartmouth campus we introduce faculty to Course Builder with a workshop in which they explore the various modules that make up the program and we demonstrate how these tools might be used in their classes. Faculty then prepare a welcome message and syllabus for their course in their word processors, and they submit a brief form requesting a course. Later they copy and paste this welcome message and syllabus into the Course Builder form.
We issue a password for the instructor and another password for the students in the class. (The instructor's password allows access to administrative areas of Course Builder not seen by the students.) This all links into the student information system so that an email list is automatically generated for the class. (Faculty can edit this list if students later add or drop the course.)
The key process, however, involves filling out a form to generate the Web site and that's what you will be doing in this demonstration. In filling out that form you'll give some basic information about your course, and you'll select the modules you want, and in some cases make decisions about exactly how you would want those modules to work. Don't let this worry you. It's just a demonstration and you aren't going to break anything.
When you click on the link at the bottom of this page you will be asked for a username and password. Use the following:
username: aprofessor
password: demo
The password is case sensitive.
You will now be on a page that starts like this:

This page contains instructions and lists the courses "A Professor"
has requested. (Each professor actually using Course Builder gets a page like this
listing all their courses.) In this case there's just one course and you will find
it listed by scrolling to the bottom of the page weher there is a table that looks
like this. (Shown half size.) ![]()
When you see that table, click on the "TST101" link to begin building your course.. (Please ignore all other links on that page.)
Congratulations. You should now find yourself on the actual Course Builder page.
Please do not enter anything in the first seven fields of this form.
They will look like
the image at right (shown here half size).
Please leave this section exactly as you see it.
One of those fields asks for your initials. Be sure to leave it blank.
